Mobile WiMAX to Drive Rapid Broadband Adoption in Pakistan and Emerging Markets

The Vice President of Strategy and Business Development will discuss Mobilink's plans for the deployment of its new Mobile WiMAX network that will cover Pakistan's major urban areas including Lahore and Islamabad, and will provide broadband access in geographic areas where broadband coverage was not previously available. As a subsidiary of Orascom Telecom, Mobilink recognizes the significant opportunities for WiMAX in the fixed broadband market in developing countries like Pakistan. As the 7th largest country in the world with a population of over 160 million, Pakistan has an untapped consumer broadband market of less than 3 million dial-up Internet users and only 100,000 DSL and HFC connections.  As Pakistan's largest cellular service provider with over 30 million subscribers, Mobilink will explain its choice of Mobile WiMAX as a path to 4G.

Telekom Slovenia owns 42 MHz in 3.5GHz band with the obligation for nationwide WiMAX coverage. While 3.5GHz gives urban capacity, the challenge lies in the coverage of the last 10% of population. This keynote will present and discuss Telekom Slovenia's case for WiMAX deployment addressing the challenge of most efficiently ensuring nationwide BWA coverage.

Telekom Slovenia has an innovative approach and considers to deploy 450MHz WiMAX to fill white spots in cities and to cover large rural areas quickly and cost efficiently as overlay to its existing 3.5GHz network. Telekom Slovenia, an incumbent Tier 1 operator, had its WiMAX network installed in 2007 using equipment from Telsima and is serving commercial customers since early 2008. Telekom Slovenia will share its experience in planning and optimizing a real nationwide WiMAX deployment and Telsima will present the evolution path to Mobile WiMAX.

This plenary session will examine the impact of the global credit crunch on financing mobile WiMAX network deployments, which is threatening new network build-outs, the expansion of business, and the ability to raise money, especially for mid-size and small companies with riskier business models. Session participants will also address questions on financing problems faced by many WiMAX/4G players, and offer tips for success on how those problems can be mitigated.
